Company history

Traditionally rooted and always with an eye on the new

Passion for wood, handcrafted production and fine writing instruments – that has always been the hallmark of e+m Holzprodukte. What began over 120 years ago has found its continuation today in Matthias Bellan. But first things first.

In 1899, Konrad Ehmann founded a small turnery in Nuremberg, specialised in the manufacture of pen holders. For reasons of space and to ensure the continuation of the business, a move out of Nuremberg to the countryside in Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate became unavoidable. In an old factory, the production and worldwide distribution of writing instruments could now be steadily expanded and thus the largest penholder factory in Germany developed in the Upper Palatinate. During the war years, the company was severely challenged by material shortages, a lack of labour and the destruction of the production facility. But there was no sign of standstill or rest. Then, in the 1980s, the next big step. In the meantime, the traditional company was already being run by the 4th generation and Ehmann‘s great-grandson Wolfram Mümmler developed stylish writing instruments on his own. Under his aegis, the first ballpoint pens made of local woods were created at the beginning of the eco-movement – a real novelty at that time. Mümmler, who steered the fortunes of e+m Holzprodukte for 40 years, always acted according to the maxim of preserving the tradition of the family business and at the same time developing it further as an innovative and progressive company.

This claim is also followed by Matthias Bellan, who will lead e+m as owner and managing director from 2021. He already has a wealth of experience in the manufacture of wood products and in the digitization of manufacturing processes. The young wood engineer wants to convince with timeless designs and remain competitive with futureoriented technologies. With his commitment to “Made in Germany” and “sustainability”, he fully follows the philosophy of e+m: ”My goal is to enrich the valuable company tradition with innovations in order to continuously expand our success nationally and internationally”, explains Matthias Bellan.
